Job Description

Site Safety and Health Officer

Norfolk Dredging Company, a prominent dredging contractor with over 120 years of dredging history, is currently looking for seasoned Site Safety and Health Officers who have at least 5 years of dredging, marine or construction experience. Military experience relating to marine operations, construction or safety will be considered.

The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) is a field position. SSHO’s will need to travel and work at various jobsites along the eastern seaboard of the United States. The SSHO has safety, health, and environmental management responsibility for ensuring a safe work environment at his/her project site. The SSHO is responsible for performing safety walkthroughs to assess and mitigate risk aboard our various dredges, tugs, barges and other marine equipment. Should an accident or injury occur, the SSHO should be able to perform an accurate and thorough investigation. Good writing and communication skills are imperative. This position is 100% field based so extensive travel is required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site hazard and risk assessments, safety audits, accident investigations and equipment inspections to mitigate risk. Initiate and monitor corrective action.
  • Understand basic dredging and marine operations and incorporate company Accident Prevention Plan (APP) and other plans and policies into the workplace.
  • Must be able to interpret, evaluate, and provide technical guidance on project safety requirements including fall protection, confined space entry, materials handling, welding, marine operations, electrical safety and other topics. The SSHO should design and implement corrective measures to mitigate known hazards.
  • Develop and conduct onsite worker training on safety procedures and regulations, safe work practices, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), PPE and other safety related issues.
  • Monitor compliance with OSHA, USCG and Army COE safety, health and environmental requirements.

Qualifications

  • MUST HAVE an OSHA 30 Hour General or Construction Safety certificate. No exceptions.
  • MUST HAVE at least 5 years of dredging, construction or marine safety experience. No exceptions.
  • Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in occupational safety preferred.
  • Previous U.S. Army Corps of Engineers experience and familiarity with EM385-1-1 is a plus.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills are required.
  • Proficient computer skills with experience in Microsoft Office required.
  • Excellent command of the English language (reading, speaking, and writing) is required.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Extensive travel is required. Rotation is 15 days on, 6 off.

 

Physical Requirements

In order to perform the essential

functions of this position, the successful candidate must have the ability to:

  • Work on vessels in and around the water in all weather conditions.
  • Climb ladders, stairs and vessel gangways.
  • Lift, carry and pull or push items weighing up to 15 lbs.
  • Stand and walk on unsteady, uneven, soft or hard surfaces or rough terrain for extended periods of time.
  • Work outside in all-weather conditions.
  • Work extended hours, early morning or at night, as needed.
