The University of Michigan's Department of Psychiatry is looking for an ambitious, detail oriented candidate to be a part of our growing team. The RA in this role will help recruit, interview,  and provide Motivational Interviewing (MI) interventions for a federally funded clinical trial.

The study is a SMART trial lookin to evaluate three virtual treatment interventions for alcohol use disorder. As an RA, you will make sure that accurate and timely data is collected for participants throughout this large-scale project. You will also have the opportunity to be trained in two of the MI-based treatment interventions, one a telehealth session and the other a text-based portal. This position is a great opportunity to learn more about the human subjects research process from start to finish, gain experience in 1:1 participant contact (both through interviews and intervention) and expand your knowledge on substance use and mental health treatment. In this role you may have opportunity to work on other research projects within the lab as need arises.

Position specific responsibilities will include: 

  • Engaging in the participant recruitment, screening, and informed consent process. 
  • Completing data collection assessments with participants by phone, computer, or mail. 
  • Use the programs and systems outlined below for project data entry and to track participant information. 
    • Microsoft Access
    • Microsoft Excel
    • REDCap
    • Qualtrics
    • Other programs as needed
  • Additional responsibilities include maintaining project records, reviewing electronic medical records to identify eligible study participants, performing thorough risk assessments in accordance with study protocols, data entry, remuneration and mailing, participating in team meetings and trainings, and coordination of daily study tasks as needed to carry out the study.

A fully prepared candidate for this role will have: 

  • an Associate's degree in Health Science or an equivalent combination of related education and experience. 
  • an understanding of medical terminology, experience in a large complex health care setting, ability to effectively communicate with staff and faculty of all levels, and knowledge of university policies and procedures. 
  • a background in research methods and/or clinical settings. 
  • previous experience using MS Excel, MS Access, and other MS programs; Qualtrics; and REDCap. 
  • previous experience running analyses or using data analysis software (R, SPSS, SAS, etc.)
  • previous experience working with patients and/or substance use populations. 
  • an eagerness to learn new tasks and skills. 
  • a strong ability to problem-solve. 
  • the ability to maneuver throughout technology and remote communication. 

In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining a schedule consisting of 40 hours per week held within 5 days. Our typical workday begins at either 8am or 9am, and ends at either 4pm or 5 pm. Your specific schedule will be determined in concert with the supervisor. Some weekend or evening shifts will be needed to meet the goals and needs of the research grants. Flexible hours may be available for staff while we work remotely for participant-facing activities only at the discretion and pre-approval from the supervisor.
