The Courthouse Police Officer position is a commissioned law enforcement officer position. This position provides Policing and Safety Services for the 18th Judicial District Courthouses, Sedgwick County physical properties, employees, and the citizens. Courthouse Police Officers have Statutory Powers of Arrest and are authorized by law to serve court summons/ subpoenas and other documents of the court.

 

Perform Access Control and Screening Functions for the 18th Judicial District Courthouse

  • Greet and direct the public through the metal detectors.
  • Instruct the public on the procedure for checking personal property, x-raying bags, brief cases, purses, and coats.
  • Visually and physically screen the publics’ property.
  • Hand scan and/or physically check citizens.
  • Be Sensitive and alert to medical conditions that require the citizen to bypass the walk through scanner and send them to be hand scanned.
  • Direct the public to appropriate offices or employees and answer any questions they may have.
  • Check employee badges, LEO Credentials and Fast Passes.
  • Operate the Control Center’s phone and camera systems.
  • Complete daily activity, compound and property logs

 

Perform Law Enforcement Duties

  • Patrol county facilities to provide a visible, uniformed deterrent and monitor for signs of criminal activity.
  • Escort Persons as necessary.
  • Respond to and properly document Calls for Service, including fire alarms, vehicle crashes, and disturbances.
  • Conduct investigations, detain suspect(s), and conduct arrests as necessary.
  • Provide police presence and security for the protection of a Judge, Jury, courtroom occupants, or other court hearings/duties as assigned.
  • Detain and Arrest on commitment orders, warrants, or upon finding probable cause.
  • Ensure respectful behavior from participants in the courtroom by enforcement of District Court Rules.
  • Respond to calls for assistance from Service Officers for backup and to make arrests.
  • Serve as first responder to provide aid and assistance to victims of automobile accidents crashes; assist Fire and Emergency Medical Services at the scene of traffic accidents.
  • Prepare and maintain department records and reports in compliance with departmental policies and procedures; prepare and file written case reports
  • Assist other emergency response agencies and County services such as EMS and Fire in emergency situations.
  • Enforce Kansas statutes and Sedgwick County resolutions.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Six months of experience in law enforcement, security services, or a related field. High School diploma or equivalent. Currently certified Law Enforcement Officer under KSCPOST, or must certify within 120 days. Must be a United States Citizen. Must be 21 years or older. Candidate can have no record of criminal conviction, diversion, or expungement of any felony or crime of dishonesty, or the equivalent under the uniform code of military justice. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current automobile insurance.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Five years of law enforcement experience. Customer Service Skills.
