Under the general direction of the Senior Public Service Administrator/Charge Processing Division Manager of the Department of Human Rights, organizes, plans, executes, controls and evaluates the Mediation Program. Communicates effectively in Spanish in order to execute the responsibilities of the position to meet the demands for services to the monolingual community.
1. Mediates approximately five DHR charges per week by communicating the availability and advantages of the Mediation program and convening a meeting with the parties.
2. Answers general inquiries about the DHR process and employment discrimination mediation.
3. Recommends revises and implements substantive and administrative policies to assist in the operation of the Mediation Program.
4. Evaluates Mediation Program by devising and generating computer reports clients surveys and other means and assessing results.
5. Organizes and prepares files for mediation conferences logs in parties drafts paperwork for mediated charges.
6. Tracks mediation files using computer database. Ensures that files move through the Mediation Program in an effective and timely manner.
7. Translates discussions functions/procedures policies and documents into Spanish for individuals who cannot speak or read English.
8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college, preferably with coursework in business or public administration.
2. Requires one year of professional experience which includes mediating disputes, preferably including those dealing with discrimination issues, or, requires completion of an approved agency training program.
3. Requires certification as a mediator from an approved certifying organization.
4. It is a requirement of this position that you possess the ability to speak and write Spanish at a colloquial skill level.
1. Prefers the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and work with individuals in conflict to reach mutually acceptable outcomes.
2. Prefers the ability to quickly grasp key issues and facts, and identify plausible alternatives.
3. Prefers the ability to interpret and apply the Human Rights Act and Department’s rules and regulations in mediating charges of discrimination.
4. Prefers the ability to utilize a personal computer and productivity software to prepare reports and case paperwork, maintain and extra database information and communicate with others via email.

2. Requires the ability to travel occasionally with the possibility of overnight stays.
