ASSOCIATE PARK AND RECREATION SPECIALIST – CULTURAL RESOURCES DIVISION / TRIBAL AFFAIRS PROGRAM
The reporting location for this position is Sacramento. This position will work under the direction of the Staff Services Manager I.
The selected candidate will have a leadership role within a team of interdisciplinary professionals to fulfill the Department's NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA responsibilities.
The incumbent should be a good listener, tactful communicator, and have a keen interest in solving complex issues. The incumbent will take the lead formal, government-to-government consultations with federally recognized and non-federally recognized tribes. They will work with culturally affiliated tribes to identify and repatriate the remains of their ancestors and cultural items in a respectful and expeditious manner.
The incumbent should have strong writing and analytical skills. They will be expected to develop and maintain expert knowledge of NAGPRA and the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 2001 (CalNAGPRA) and take lead responsibility for reporting requirements. This position will complete collaborative research with a team of cultural resource professionals from related program areas, tasked with supporting the Department’s NAGPRA, CalNAGPRA, and PRC § 5097.98 compliance.
Training and Development Assignments may be considered. This position is designated as telework eligible-office centered.

Statement of Qualifications
A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) must be submitted along with the State Application and serves as documentation of a candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. Describe your knowledge of and experience with applying the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of1990 (NAGPRA), California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 2001 (CalNAGPRA), and/or repatriation of Native American cultural resources, more generally. If you do not have substantial knowledge or experience in applying these laws, describe how your knowledge and experiences would be transferrable to the duties outlined for this position as NAGPRA Program Lead.
