Description

General Responsibilities:
Responsible for providing programmatic and educational instruction to children with autism in the elementary school setting.
Essential Duties;

  • Interprets the abilities and disabilities of students with autism; works cooperatively with students' teachers to provide support and resources and assists teacher with class assignments for autism students;
  • Observe and continue to monitor students with ASD and provide recommendations to the IEP team on changes which may benefit the education experience of the student;
  • Collect data related to IEP goal, academic, and behavioral progress of students in the general education and special education setting and recommend changes if needed;
  • Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide appropriate educational programs for students with autism and related disabilities;
  • Assists with development of curriculum planning and materials related to successful implementation of IEP;
  • Develops short- and long-range goals for the student's individualized education program (IEP);
  • Maintains and provides accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations;
  • Keeps abreast of recent developments in education for special education students and ASD and shows evidence of continuing professional growth;
  • Create and deliver evidence-based lessons addressing social skills for students with ASD;
  • Writes annual IEPs and amendments for students with ASD;
  • Writes reports related to testing and observation of students with ASD;
  • Administer assessments specific to students with ASD;
  • Provides in-class support on best practices for working with students with ASD;
  • Assist in transitions between levels and Least Restricted Environment;
  • Works collaboratively with general and special education teachers to provide services and supports for students with ASD in the least restrictive environment;
  • Able to be trained in crisis prevention and de-escalation system;
  • Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Working knowledge: of the learning characteristics of the autism spectrum disorder; of various methods of instruction of children with autism, including, but not limited to TEACCH, ABA, and PECS; of Functional Behavioral Assessments and Positive Behavioral Support Approaches. Possess the ability to foster collaboration between all parties. Requires sound classroom management techniques and the ability to assist in I.E.P. development while writing measurable academic, social and behavioral goals.

Education and Experience:

Required: Bachelors Degree in appropriate related field. Have a current (or be eligible for) a Virginia Teaching License, with an endorsement to teach in Special Education. Successful experience/background in Autism.

Preferred: Masters Degree.

A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

An opt-out credit is available for full-time and part-time employees who do not participate. For those who participate in the High Deductible Plan, HCPS contributes annually to a Health Savings Account and employees can choose to contribute more to that account.

Time Off Benefits *
  • Paid Holidays - 10- month and 11-month personnel follow the School Calendar. 12-month full-time classified employees receive 13 holidays per year (9 designated days and 4 floating days).
  • Vacation - 12-month employees earn 1 day of leave per month for their first four years of service, 1.25 days for 5 - 9 years of service, and 1.5 days for 10 or more years of service.
  • Sick Leave - Full-time employees earn one sick leave day per month (10 - 12 depending on length of contract) with unlimited accrual. Part-time employees will earn sick leave on a prorated basis.
  • Personal Leave - Full-time employees earn two days per year the first 3 years of service and 3 days per year with 3 or more years of service.

Savings & Retirement
  • VRS Retirement - Employees who work more than 5.5 hours per day participate in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). The benefit is 95% paid for by Hanover County Schools.
  • VRS Hybrid Retirement Optional Contribution Plan - HCPS offers an additional plan for Hybrid employees who can choose to contribute up to an additional 4% in voluntary contributions to the defined contribution component of the Hybrid Retirement Plan each month, which is matched to a maximum of 2.5% by HCPS.
  • Retirement Savings Plans - HCPS offers 403(b) and 457 plans through Empower. These plans allow employees to set aside pre or post tax dollars for retirement. HCPS contributes $250/year toward 403(b) account for non-VRS eligible employees. Any HCPS employee can make contributions to these plans.
  • Premium Conversion/Section 125 - HCPS allows employees to take insurance premium deductions on pre-tax basis.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts - HCPS offers a Medical FSA and a Dependent Care FSA for eligible expenses.
Income Protection & Security
  • Life Insurance -Paid for 100% by HCPS for VRS eligible employees. The benefit is two times annual salary for natural death and 4 times annual salary for accidental death. Additional life insurance is available for purchase to cover spouse and children or to increase employee benefit.
  • Sick Leave Bank - Income protection for up to 45 days due to a catastrophic illnesses/injury . Available to part-time, and VRS Plan 1 and 2 employees who enroll.
