POSITION SUMMARY :

Under general direction of the Deputy Director of Public Works/Deputy City Engineer, and assigned under the direct supervision of a Solid Waste Foreman, performs general equipment operation and solid waste collection work.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED :

None.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Collects and disposes of solid waste and/or recycling refuse throughout the city.
  • Drives and operates a variety of refuse collection equipment including operating a tilt-frame truck, 20 to 40 -yard roll-off containers, automated side loader, automated packers, stake bed delivery vehicle, and light, medium, and heavy trucks.
  • Responsible for daily maintenance of assigned truck including checking fluid levels, hydraulic hoses, tire wear and pressure, and safety devices; completes required daily preventive maintenance and other logs.
  • Cleans trucks on assigned schedule or as needed to maintain effective operations; refers equipment to fleet management for needed repairs.
  • Collects refuse daily on assigned routes; follows a complicated route map and completes route within allotted time.
  • Operates in light to heavy traffic through residential areas and on the highways; collects from containers while driving and/or backing between parked vehicles and other obstructions in tight, restricted, or congested area.
  • Loads, compacts, and transports refuse to designated sanitation dumping facility and dumps collected refuse in accordance with established policy and procedures; and ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and policies regulating safety and load limits.
  • Assists other solid waste operators with their routes as needed.
  • May assist customers with specific needs, such as box pickups, bringing cans to curbside, etc.; may be required to manually empty trash containers in certain areas.
  • May provide service for missed pickups from previous workdays.
  • Reports damaged or missing containers to appropriate personnel; assists the streets division by reporting damaged roads, and missing or damaged traffic signals and signs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Solid Waste Equipment Operator I:

  • Education – High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience – One-year general equipment operation and/or maintenance experience or other job-related experience.
  • Licenses/Certifications – Valid Utah Class B Commercial Driver License.

 

Solid Waste Equipment Operator II:

  • Education – High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience – Three years experience as a Solid Waste Equipment Operator, operating a side loader residential garbage truck, or two years experience with Draper City as Solid Waste Equipment Operator I.
  • Licenses/Certifications – Valid Utah Class B Commercial Driver License and maintain current medical card. Must have an excellent safety record and be accident free for a minimum of two years.

 

Solid Waste Equipment Operator III:

  • Education – High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience – Four years experience with Draper City as a Solid Waste Equipment Operator, operating a side loader residential garbage truck.
  • Licenses/Certifications – Valid Utah Class B Commercial Driver License and maintain current medical card. Must have an excellent safety record and be accident free for a minimum of two years.

Solid Waste Equipment Operator I:

    • Maintenance of refuse collection trucks or other heavy equipment

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Position requires working outdoors. Moderately heavy, physical activity. Regularly required to walk, sit, stand, reach, use hands/finger to feel, handle, and grip, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May be confined to small spaces to perform work. Regular exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. (Performance of duties may require working in varied weather conditions such as extreme cold or hot conditions.) Frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and dusty or greasy conditions. Frequent exposure to high levels of noise. Operate equipment and drive vehicles for long periods of time. Must lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Work is often performed under deadlines and time constraints.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • Monday to Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., on site however, at times, position may be assigned to work early morning or late evening shifts, and weekends depending upon scheduling needs of the city or city facilities. (Unconventional working hours including long shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.)
  • Salary range:
    • Solid Waste Operator I $19.64 - $31.37 (Starting wage up to $26.00 DOE)
    • Solid Waste Operator II $21.61 - $34.53 (Starting wage up to $28.00 DOE)
    • Solid Waste Operator III $23.78 - $30.87 (Starting wage up to $30.00 DOE)
