Job Title : Sanitation Worker I    FLSA:  Hourly/Non-Exempt

Department: Sanitation                                                       Reports to : Sanitation  Supervisor

Salary Range: $15.00-$16.41

General Purpose

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work and operates a variety of equipment, in the collection of solid wastes.  This is an entry level position.  This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing. Safety sensitive positions must comply to federal regulations where marijuana still remains illegal. Possession of a medical marijuana license does not exempt safety sensitive positions from federal regulations. Should one of these safety sensitive positions test positive on a drug test and lose the ability to perform within the job description outline, the City of Claremore will implement the zero tolerance policy resulting in immediate termination.

Essential Duties

  • Assists in picking up solid waste containers, including recyclable or yard waste as assigned, and depositing the containers into a collection vehicle, and returning containers to the prescribed area.
  • Assists in making special collections as assigned.
  • Remove brush from private property, as requested by city sanitation customers; (This brush is usually placed on the curb by the customer unless circumstances dictate otherwise) Operate chipper truck;
  • Observes surrounding conditions such as citizens, equipment, property, etc. in order to assure that solid waste is collected in a safe manner, regulates traffic in hazardous conditions in order to assure safe manner, and regulates traffic in hazardous conditions in order to assure safety conditions for other collection personnel and the general public.
  • Assists in performing routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to foreman; cleans equipment.
  • Assists in responding to complaints at the curb; resolves complaints within scope of authority; explains actions to route person and/or truck driver.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Desired Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent
  • Any equivalent combination or education and experience.
  • Valid Oklahoma State driver’s license. Class "B" CDL or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire
  • Must be insurable by City’s insurance carrier.

Knowledge:  Some knowledge of equipment, methods and procedures used in solid waste and recyclable collection activities.

Abilities: Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Skill:  Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.

Tools & Equipment:

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including packer truck, flatbed collection truck, utility truck, hydraulic lifts, common hand tools, chipper, chain saws of various sizes, power tools, pitch fork, wrenches, mobile or portable radio.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to stand and walk and sit.  The employee occasionally required to hear and talk. 

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 65 pounds and must be able to safely push up to a 400-pound container.  Spherical vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. 

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, frequently is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and is frequently exposed to changing traffic conditions that could be hazardous at times.  The employee is at risk of exposure to communicable diseases while handling refuge.

The noise level in the work environment is usually noisy.
