Description:

Reporting to the Associate to the President for Government and Community Affairs, the Program Manager is responsible for researching and managing projects to support the overall strategic governmental and community relations plan for Hofstra University. The Program Manager will support the University’s effort in collaborating with external communities and stakeholders for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge, experience, opportunity, and resources. The successful candidate will be a forward-thinking team player, with a passion for higher education and a proven track record of supporting community engagement.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Researches and identifies community engagement opportunities to help carry out the goals of the University’s strategic plan.
  • Collaborates across departments to help develop a centralized portal for tracking and facilitating active community engagement projects.
  • Works with departments to create content for various communication channels, including print publications, email newsletters, social media, websites, and digital platforms.
  • Researches and identifies networking opportunities to increase Hofstra’s visibility and eligibility for federal, state, and local grants.
  • Monitors legislation and policy activity and works with campus partners to analyze potential impacts on the University.
  • Works closely with externally focused units at Hofstra, such as the National Center for Suburban Studies, the Office of Commuting Student Services and Community Outreach, and the Center for Civic Engagement to partner on community initiatives.
  • Supports Hofstra events that create excitement and engagement between groups of stakeholders and audiences to build upon the Hofstra brand.
  • Helps identify opportunities to host events and other activities to support the University’s government relations goals, such as town halls, news conferences, campus visits, and meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of demonstrated success in governmental relations, communications and/or community organizing.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills and experience preparing a variety of written communication.
  • Understanding of local, state, and federal legislative and executive process, including budget and appropriations processes and timelines, and procedural rules related to legislative and rule-making processes.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret legislation and policy documents.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office.
