Purpose

Performs a variety of functions, including assisting in borrowing of material, to provide a positive experience for visitors to the City of Kingsport Public Library.

Essential Functions

• Plans, implements, and reflects on appropriate programs;
• Attends community events, and visits civic groups,schools, and other sites to promote library information and resources;
• Completes circulations tasks;
• Takes requests and borrows requested materials from other library systems;
• Handles money received for fines, lost or damaged materials, or other fees;
• Prepares cash reports;
• Maintains the shelves;
• Maintains requested statistics;
• Performs a variety of tasks to ensure users have a positive experience using the library;
• Provides assistance to library visitors including locating materials and providing information;
• Provides Reader's Advisory;
• Ensures that the library feels welcoming by providing excellent service and by maintaining a clean, organized library;
• Develops displays;
• Attends professional development and educational workshops; and
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• General knowledge of library operating policies and procedures;
• Knowledge of library circulation principles and practices;
• Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to constant interruptions and frequently changing priorities;
• Ability to accurately perform basic arithmetic calculations;
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
• Open to change;
• Knowledge of a variety of authors and genres;
• Excellent customer service and communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City staff members and the general public;
• Knowledge of library circulation principles and practices;
• Proficient in use of technology to produce documents, spreadsheets, and any other product necessary to complete assigned tasks.

Education and Experience


High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree in Library Science or related field preferred. Valid TN/VA Driver's License.
