Position Summary Under the immediate supervision of the Park Supervisor the Maintenance Worker I performs semi-skilled and unskilled work in maintenance and construction tasks on city property. Primary responsibilities involve providing exceptional public service to the community. The Maintenance Worker I will value integrity, service, teamwork, dedication, vision and will be someone who cares and takes pride in their work. The duties are manual labor assignments using hand tools, power tools, and light to medium equipment. Daily assignments will follow prescribed policies and procedures and be carried out under general supervision.
Essential Functions: - Repairs and paints park amenities and facilities;
- Mows turf, trims, and edges within assigned areas of the city;
- Trimming and removing trees;
- Planting trees, shrubs, and flower beds;
- Removing debris from under bridges along waterways;
- Installing, maintaining, and repairing playground equipment;
- Assists in the sale and layout of grave sites; shows sites;
- Opens and closes graves as necessary;
- Assists the public with locating grave sites;
- Maintains roadways within cemetery;
- Maintains structures such as mausoleum, shop, office, and fencing.
- Performs general cemetery maintenance such as stone leveling, clean-up and dead tree removal.
- Cleaning restrooms and park grounds;
- Maintaining, installing, and repairing equipment and facilities;
- Operating a variety of trucks, pesticide sprayers, backhoe, mowers, and light tractors,
- Assisting in minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs and concrete work;
- Prepares Park facilities as needed for festivals or events;
- Setting up facilities for festivals or events;
- Repairs waterlines and sprinklers;
- Picks up trash; cleans shop; pulls weeds; supervises seasonal help.
Marginal Functions: - Installs, maintains, repairs, and removes holiday decorations;
- Assists in the training of seasonal staff;
- Does minor electrical, plumbing repair and carpentry;
- Performs fabrication and repair welding;
- Performs snow removal;
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements: Experience : One to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer at least 6 months of grounds maintenance, equipment operation, direct customer service and facilities maintenance experience. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in this position. Must have a valid Kansas Driver's License at the time of hire.
Education : High school or GED preferred with and additional preference for post high school education.
Skills : Knowledge of small equipment operation and maintenance and lawn chemicals. The ability to operate a backhoe, dump truck, generator and water pump, welder, and other related equipment. Knowledge of handheld power tools and ability to make adjustments to small equipment.

Accountability : Employee is accountable for the tools and equipment used on the job.
Personal Relations : Continual contact with other city departments and the public.
Supervisory Responsibilities : The employee in this position may lead part-time seasonal employees.
Working Conditions : Manual labor is required and adverse weather conditions and working with pesticides are factors in this position. Exposure to equipment, noise, hazardous chemicals, and all types of weather conditions. The worker walks on uneven terrain and surfaces that may be slick from rain, ice, snow &/or oil.
Physical Requirements : The Park/Cemetery Maintenance Worker I's physical job demands include occasional maximum lift of 102.5 lbs from floor to 18 inches; occasional maximum lift of 50 lbs floor to 45 inches; occasional maximum lift of 40 lbs waist to overhead; occasional maximum carry 50 lbs 100 feet; occasional maximum push/pull force of 20 lbs; occasional maximum vertical pull force of 65 lbs; occasional maximum grip force 60 lbs; frequent maximum grip force 20 lbs; occasional climb up to 25" ht, various ladders; frequent forward reach; occasional overhead reach; frequent bend; frequent bend/crouch; occasional crouch/kneel; frequent hand coordination; frequent foot coordination; frequent neck rotation; frequent balance; constant sitting; frequent standing and frequent walking.
