Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Schedule and staff trips, facilitate logistics, lead trips, and continually evolve OA’s outdoor programs.
  2. Serve as primary risk manager for OA
  3. Train and supervise Residential/Outdoor Education Apprentices and Faculty in outdoor program capacities
  4. Design and teach an Outdoor Education curriculum
  5. In conjunction with the Assistant Camp Director, manage shared resource equipment budgets, the Gear Lending Library, and permits. Manage the separate OA outdoor programs budget.
  6. Coordinate transportation and vehicle needs of the school.
  7. Oversee inventory, maintenance, and purchasing for the outdoor gear and rations rooms
  8. Update program literature that relates to outdoor programs, including the gear purchase program.
  9. As a senior administrator, attend weekly meetings and serve as an Administrator on Duty.
  10. Additional responsibilities as a faculty manager or administrator to contribute to the life and function of the Semester community, based on skills/experience of applicant and needs of the program in coordination with supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. B.A. or B.S. in a related field, or prior work experience in outdoor education
  2. Experience with risk management in outdoor settings
  3. Experience with staff supervision and wilderness program logistics
  4. Wilderness First Responder required; Wilderness EMT desirable
  5. Experience in and enthusiasm for working students in experiential education, wilderness, or residential settings
  6. Well-developed planning and organizational skills
  7. A clean driving record

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULE

  1. The majority of work will be conducted on campus; however, off-site work in the outdoors supervising teenagers will occur several times each semester.  The ability to work long days in hot and/or cold environments and lift heavy gear and boxes is required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
  2. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed to fulfill program demands.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary (Contract August-July), contributory health insurance plan, retirement plans, paid time off, Camp and OA discounts for dependent children, meals, pro-deals on gear, and outdoor leadership training.  Specific benefits are outlined in the employment contract. On-campus housing is also possible.

Eagle's Nest Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is experiential education for young people promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character. Eagle's Nest supports three programs: The Outdoor Academy, a semester school for high school students from across the country; Eagle's Nest Camp, a co-ed summer camp for children ages 6-17; and Hante Adventures, a wilderness and cultural adventure program for teenagers. The Outdoor Academy is an accredited semester boarding school for talented 10th and 11th grade high school students located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. The Outdoor Academy enrolls up to 28 students from across the country to participate in a hands-on, college preparatory curriculum highlighting environmental stewardship and place-based learning. Students live in a small boarding environment focused on community and character development, and they gain outdoor leadership skills and experience through outdoor expeditions.
