Overview The National Geographic Society (NGS) is seeking a Manager of Museum Education to infuse the attitudes, skills, and knowledge of NGS Explorers and educators into learning strategies, experiences, and resources that inspire educators and learners of all ages to care about and protect the wonder of our world. The Manager collaborates with the Education and Community Engagement (ECE) division and the National Geographic Museum of Exploration (MOE) to advance learning impact through Explorer Mindset, and supports MOE learning goals and activities. This role reports to the Director of Operations with reporting responsibilities to the Senior Director of Visitor Experience and requires flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed. This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC. Responsibilities Include Program Development and Management (70%) – Design, recommend, implement and assess education programming, workshops and events at the MOE in collaboration with the MOE team; align programs for school groups with ECE learning design approaches and with national/state education standards where relevant; collaborate with exhibition designers and the MOE creative team to create interpretative materials; develop mission-focused, revenue-minded educational activities (add-on programs, make-and-take activities for various audiences); plan informal, low-production-effort visitor engagement opportunities (gallery talks, Ask Me’s, interpreters) with Explorers, staff, and subject-matter experts; develop and conduct training opportunities for Museum floor staff to enhance the visitor experience and informal learning. School, Youth and Community Engagement (30%) – Build and maintain relationships with schools, educators and youth organizations; contribute to field trips, curriculum-based programs and educator resources; facilitate outreach and partnerships to increase accessibility and relevance; develop learning solutions grounded in the Explorer Mindset to reflect community needs and interests; implement feedback exercises to evaluate MOE learning products and programs. What You’ll Bring Educational Background – Bachelor’s degree in Education, Geography, Museum Studies, Science, Social Science, History, or related field required; proficiency with educational technology and digital engagement tools is a plus. Minimum Years and Types of Experience – 5+ years in related roles, including 3-5 years in museum education or public programming; experience with curriculum development across age groups and communities; instructional design for informal education; multimedia development or educational writing/editing; informal education program development and delivery for K-16 and adult audiences. Necessary Knowledge and Skills – Excellent project management and organizational skills; strong understanding of learning theory and pedagogy for informal learning; excellent written and oral communication; ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines; experience designing and implementing educational programs for the public; proficiency with cross-functional collaboration; strong public speaking and presentation skills; familiarity with LMS, databases, web analytics, and project management tools; proficiency in Office, Google, and Adobe Creative Suites; ability to incorporate user requirements to maximize learning tool usefulness. Supervision 1 direct report Salary Information The National Geographic Society offers a competitive total rewards package. The salary range for this position is $85,500.00 - $90,000.00, based on factors including experience and qualifications. The package includes comprehensive benefits described by the organization.
