JOB SUMMARY
Under limited supervision, the Fire Marshal plans, organizes, develops, and implements a comprehensive fire prevention program for the City.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Prepares work schedules; manages any employee issues; monitors employee performance; plans and leads Department training programs.
* Manages and coordinates the staff and activities related to investigations and inspections; processes information related to tier II hazardous materials and mobile food vendor permits.
* Coordinates investigations; supervises staff conducting inspections and investigations; manages the property room and body-worn camera systems.
* Reviews and responds to questions and complaints from developers, business owners, contractors, and citizens.
* Researches, interprets, and develops codes; reviews and analyzes fire incident data to identify trends and ongoing issues; develops reports for internal and external use.
* Attends and participates in various meetings as required.
* Performs related duties as required or assigned.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field. While in the field, you may be exposed to extreme temperatures, dust, loud noises, communicable diseases, other biological hazards, potential mechanical, traffic, and electrical hazards, and hazardous fumes and chemicals while in emergency incident activities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
Associate degree in Fire Science Fire Investigation, or related field (preferred), AND five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in fire prevention and inspection or ten (10) years in fire suppression OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of:
* Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
* General office policies, procedures, and practices.
* Records maintenance and retention practices and procedures.
* Principles, practices, methods, and techniques of modern fire prevention, life safety, emergency medical services, and fire suppression activities.
* Procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous materials.
* Operational characteristics, services, and activities of a comprehensive fire service program.
* Operation, maintenance, and use of all department apparatus and equipment.
* Work safety policies, procedures, practices, and equipment.
* Budget development and administration practices and principles.
Skill in:
* Providing effective supervision, leadership, and direction to Department members.
* Developing and implementing budgets.
* Following and enforcing safe work practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
* Interpreting and explaining codes and ordinances.
* Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
* Developing, implementing, and revising policies and procedures.
* Maintaining composure in stressful situations.
* Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
* Maintaining accurate records and filing systems.
* Preparing clear and concise reports.
* Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
* Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a Texas Commission on Fire Protection Inspector and Investigator certification.
Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Peace Officer certification (Preferred).
Texas Commission on Fire Protection Arson Investigator certification (Preferred).
