The Pasadena Fire Department is seeking a dedicated and motivated Fire Inspector with a strong work ethic to join the team. The Fire Inspector will conduct inspections of a variety of buildings, places of public assembly, and large special events to ensure and enforce compliance with the California Fire Code and referenced standards, regulations, and local ordinances applicable to fire prevention and life safety.


The ideal candidate is customer oriented and has a working knowledge of the principles and practices of fire safety, education, protection, prevention, and inspection programs. The Fire Inspector must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a passion for life-long learning and professional development, a strong work ethic, hazmat and/or bush inspection experience are highly desirable.

Essential Functions
The major responsibilities of this position are listed below. For more detailed information, please review the
  • Enforces provisions of the California Fire Code, codes relating to fire/life safety hazards and hazardous materials, and other related codes, regulations, laws and ordinances.
  • Conducts routine inspections of new construction and building alterations for compliance with approved plans, including but not limited to requirements related to fire sprinklers, water supply, access, exits, and fire alarms.
  • Performs basic new construction plan reviews and indicates necessary corrections for fire protection systems; ensures plans meet the requirements of related federal, state, and local fire protection, life safety, and environmental codes, regulations and restrictions.
  • Inspects existing businesses for fire hazards, proper operation of fire protection systems, adequacy of fire escapes and exits, hazardous materials and processes, and general compliance with fire codes. Determines correction actions required to comply with codes, as appropriate.
  • Conducts business license inspections, and reviews and monitors business practices to ensure compliance with current fire and life safety codes.
  • Tests and inspects installed fire protection systems, fire alarm systems and automatic fire suppression systems; conducts fire flow tests; coordinates work with other local agencies.
  • Prepares and issues correction notices for code violations, conducts follow-up inspections to ensure corrections have been made and issues permits; issues citations when necessary.

  • Prepares and maintains inspection reports, records, daily log, technical information, and correspondence. Prepares pre-incident emergency plans accordance with applicable NFPA Standards and utilizing software programs and other means as needed.
  • Interprets and explains requirements and restrictions relative to environmental and fire safety codes, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures; develops alternative methods to comply with requirements and restrictions.
  • Confers with and advises contractors, architects, engineers, developers, and the public regarding fire code related ordinances.
  • Evaluates fire protection systems; locates and identifies existing or potential fire safety problems and recommends appropriate fire prevention/safety measures and devices.
  • Conducts research, analyzes data, compiles information and prepares and presents reports on inspections and any action taken with respect to fire prevention.
  • Conducts fire safety public education, and disaster preparedness programs. Develops, conducts and oversees fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and safety education activities, including preparation of informational materials; classroom and community group presentations; and attendance and speaking at public events.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast on new developments within the field of fire code and building compliance. Provides and participates in Fire Prevention training.
  • Coordinates and conducts, or provides assistance at, special events such as Fire Prevention Week activities, and other community events.

Qualification Guidelines
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance. Example combinations include:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate degree in fire science or a closely related field.
  • One year of progressively responsible experience in fire-prevention activities including conducting fire inspections, fire prevention or life safety plan checks and related functions; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desirable Qualification:
  • California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector I certification.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I certification.
  • Five years of full-time paid experience as a Fire Inspector/Prevention Officer, with no breaks in service in a municipal fire agency.
  • Hazmat or Bush inspection experience is highly desirable.
Selection Process:
The selection process will consist of any combination of application evaluation, subject matter expert review, a structured panel interview, and a department level interview.

Special Requirements


  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of continued employment.
  • Must possess POST Basic Course- Module III certification (PC 832 Training for Reserve Level III) within 12 months of employment.
  • Must possess International Code Council Fire Inspector I Certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Must possess a Fire Inspector II issued by the Office of the California State Fire Marshal w ithin three (3) years of employment.
Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.

Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.

All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.
