The Space Vehicles Directorate, Geospace Environment Impacts and Applications Branch seeks to hire a mid-level, DR-02/03/04 supervisory engineer or scientist in Albuquerque, New Mexico to serve as the Chief, Laboratory and Space Based Measurements Section (RVBXB). The Laboratory and Space Based Measurements section is a 25-member civilian, in-house contractor, and military team.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Leads a team of scientists and engineers working on a diverse product portfolio in the space environment.
  • Provides day-to-day execution of the section and programmatic duties for the organization.
  • Directs other scientists, engineers, and technicians in the development of experimental techniques, laboratory hardware, and model software.
  • Trains and equips civilian and military researchers to execute ionospheric research and to implement branch science and technology development plans.
  • Helps with recruiting, developing, & retaining an R&D team including planning and resource allocation.
  • Supervises a team of researchers, civilian and military, and works with branch management to properly staff research efforts.
  • Supervises and manages the personnel and activities of the Ionospheric Impacts Section.
  • Develops, plans, and carries out their own basic or applied research of the thermosphere, ionosphere, or magnetosphere appropriate to DoD interest.
  • Communicates research results in scientific journals and by presentations at scientific/technical conferences and USAF/DoD briefings and meetings. Seeks, advocates, and secures support for these efforts from customers.
  • Enhances military understanding of the space environment with optical, radio, and satellite in-situ and remote sensing data and coordinates results with international cooperative studies of the ionosphere.
  • Ensuring section members are properly trained, staffed, and equipped by coordinating formal training, mentoring, and enabling the execution of branch technical teams and sections.
  • Solves challenging technical and personnel issues as they arise.
  • Prepares, edits, and tracks military performance reports, decorations, and feedbacks.
  • Recognizes branch individuals through quarterly award packages, and other avenues of recognition. As well as assisting with writing military performance reports.
  • Assists with approving timecards, travel, and leave requests as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Must possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree from an accredited academic institution
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience conducting self-directed research of the space environment
  • This position is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level II (Practitioner) Non-Critical certification in Engineering and Technology Management (ETM).
  • The selectee will have 24-months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained. 80 hours of qualified continuous learning will be required every two years. Applicants for this position must list any acquisition certifications and status as an acquisition corps member in their resume.
  • Applicants must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain a DOD secret clearance
